today was a lesson in Microsloth futility. my boss had some problems with his
home personal win98 machine. basically, he's trying to add an ethernet card.
sounds simple right? something that 3 senior techical computer professionals
should be able to handle?
wrong! he already has AOL 4.0, and dialup networking installed so he can use
AOL and also dial into work with it. so we figured "hey a 3rd adapter is no
big deal, we just add it and go!" well not exactly. after about 6 hours of
dorking around, we decided that you can only have 2 network interfaces active
in win98, althought it lets you add as many as you want. so between my boss,
another tech guy who is his neighbor, and me, we couldnt get it to work. our
only answer was that he couldnt have 3 things at once, and we couldnt get it to
work until we removed AOL. so we gave up, since it was all for an experiment.
its all to prepare his computer for cable modem in a few weeks.
the good thing was that for accomplishing nothing, my boss bought me and the
other tech guy dinner!
so that was my day. work work work, and then blow out early to fix (and fail)
my bosses home computer.
too bad he didnt buy a mac. much simpler
